A man is in hospital after being hit by falling rocks on Mount Ngauruhoe.
The Greenlea Rescue Helicopter in Taupo says the man, who is 28 years old, was descending the northern slopes of the mountain on Saturday afternoon with a woman when some rocks dislodged.
Rescue staff say the man shielded the woman from the rocks and was hit in the arms and legs.
The rescue helicopter flew the man to Taupo Hospital.
