A man arrested over a hit-and-run incident in Auckland that left a South Korean student with critical injuries has appeared in court.

The student, 24, is in a serious but stable condition in Auckland Hospital.

He was hit in the city centre last Tuesday when the accused allegedly drove a stolen vehicle through a red light. Police had just begun a pursuit of the vehicle.

Nathan Anderson, 27, of no fixed abode, appeared in Auckland District Court on Wednesday to face five charges, including aggravated wounding and other traffic offences.

He was remanded in custody until 24 March.
