Quad bike crash charges delayed until test results

Police say it will be a couple of weeks before they can lay charges over a quad bike crash that seriously injured a six-year-old.

The girl was hurt along with four adults when the quad bike they were riding veered off a bank and rolled at Waimarama on the Hawke's Bay coast on Wednesday.

The child suffered a number of broken bones and remains at Auckland's Starship Hospital. Her condition has improved from critical to serious but stable.

The girl's father and one other man are also still receiving hospital treatment.

Police have said all four adults appeared intoxicated at the time of the crash. Senior Sergeant Luke Shadbolt says blood from them is being tested, but the results will not be known for a fortnight.

Those results will determine the seriousness of the charges, he says.
