Device left at petrol station found to be harmless

A suspicious device left at a petrol station in the Wellington suburb of Tawa has turned out to be harmless.

Police say employees of the BP service station on the corner of Main Road and Tawa Street alerted them to a device made up of several electrical wires at at 9.40pm on Saturday.

Surrounding streets were cordoned off and the Defence Force's bomb disposal squad was called.

Police say the squad deconstructed the device at the scene and confirmed just before 2am on Saturday that it was not explosive.
