Sky Tower walk closed after man threatened to jump

A tourist attraction on top of Auckland's Sky Tower is closed while an investigation takes place into how a man managed to climb onto the railing on the 54th storey, before threatening to jump.

Police say the man paid to do the SkyWalk on Saturday afternoon, but walked to the railing instead.

Negotiators spent several hours talking to the man and managed to coax him inside after five hours.

The Waikato District Health Board says he is now back with psychiatric services and an investigation is underway into the circumstances of his departure from a treatment centre in Hamilton.

SkyWalk says it is pleased with the outcome as no one was hurt, and says all correct safety procedures were followed.

Director Steve Weidmann says the man scaled a safety fence before he was connected to overhead safety restraints.

He says the operation has been closed while a full review takes place.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the government's health and safety officials says they haven't yet decided if they will investigate, because the man was not an employee.
