More Aucklanders using public transport

Auckland Regional Transport Authority says the recession has brought more people out of their cars and onto public transport.

Latest statistics show overall use of public transport increased by 8% last year. Bus use was up 7% and rail use 18%.

The authority says factors contributing to the increase include improvements to the railway line and bus services, new fare discounts and fluctuating fuel prices.

It says future projects such as an integrated bus ticket will continue this trend.
