A man has been rescued from the Nelson Lakes area after falling about 200 metres.

A rescue helicopter responded to an emergency locator beacon about 4pm on Sunday and found a group of people on the side of the steep mountain range at the headwaters of the Matakitaki River.

A paramedic was lowered to the scene to treat a 46-year-old man who had suffered multiple injuries.

A couple from Auckland were winched onboard along with the injured man, who has been flown to Nelson Hospital.
