White Island risk drops - scientists

4:32 pm on 7 January 2013

Scientists have lowered a volcanic alert level for White Island in Bay of Plenty and say that the recent eruption there is now over.

GNS scientists raised the warning levels last year after the discovery of an unusual lava dome in a crater formed by a series of eruptions in August.

GNS Science says the most recent visit last week showed the dome had not grown in size or increased in temperature.

It has lowered the alert level from two to one, out of a possible five, indicating volcanic activity has decreased significantly.

But GNS scientists say White Island still remains in a heightened state of unrest, and will continue to be monitored.
