Tuesday's headlines: Investiture of Sir Paul Holmes to be brought forward to next week; NZ prison escaped linked to a killing in south London; Lakes Wakatipu and Wanaka still about a metre above their normal levels because of heavy rain at New Year.

The New Zealand Herald leads with the story of an minister who spent an hour trying to convince a man not to jump from the Sky Tower. Graham Browne, 80, a minister at the Jehovah's Witness congregation in Avondale tried to talk the jumper down by reading from the Bible.

Sir Paul Holmes will have his knighthood ceremony brought forward because of his failing health. The investiture will be held next week at his home in Hawke's Bay.

Waikato Times

The Waikato Times says British police are offering a reward in their hunt for Brandon Victor Pillay, who escaped from a Waikato prison 11 years ago. Pillay is believed to be linked to a murder in south London.

Firefighters in Taupo have been battling to control a scrub fire. Parts of Waikato reached critical fire conditions on Monday.

Dominion Post

The Dominion Post says hundreds of people are locked up for petty drug offences every year, many for crimes the Law Commission says should not exist.

Ministry of Justice figures show nearly as many people are imprisoned for possession of small amounts of cannabis as for dealing.

Police are charging a man withe careless driving in connection with a car crash in which his pregnant partner was injured and her unborn baby later died.

The Press leads with the latest death from a quad bike accident. Hamish Baxter died in an accident at Rakaia. Coroner Ian Smith, who recommended mandatory helmets and lapbelts for quad bike drivers two years ago, is extremely frustrated his recommendations have not been implemented.

North Canterbury residents are boiling water after more than 100 times the acceptable level of E Coli was found in Hurunui's water supply.

The Otago Daily Times leads with the death of a diabetic man who had been lying unwell on a park bench at Bayfield Park.

Expected heavy rain from Wednesday is raising concerns about possible flooding of Lakes Wakatipu and Wanaka.

Both lakes are already about a metre above normal levels because of heavy rain at New Year.
