Careless driving charges should be dropped - lawyer

A 40-year-old man facing charges related to a car crash last June that resulted in a baby's death has pleaded not guilty.

Bililigne Gebretsadik, who is originally from Ethiopia, appeared before a registrar at the Wellington District Court on Wednesday morning.

Heis facing three careless driving charges relating to injuries to the occupant of the other vehicle involved, and to his 40-year-old wife and the baby she was carrying.

She was 31-weeks pregnant and required an emergency caesarean that night.

The baby later died.

Mr Gebretsadik's lawyer John Miller said the charges are uncalled for and should be dropped.

The Newtown man has been remanded for a status hearing on 28 February.
