A search for a swimmer missing in the Waikato river will resume on Thursday.

Police started a search at 6.15pm on Wednesday after a man was reported missing near the Full James Rapids downstream of the Aratiatia Dam on the Waikato River in Taupo.

The man, believed to be an Australian tourist in his 20s, was staying in the area with a group of people.

He went for a swim and then started calling for help.

Police, the Taupo harbourmaster and coastguard continued to search the Waikato River until light faded.

The Police National Dive Team have been contacted and are expected to join the search on Thursday morning.
