Neighbours praised for thwarting break-in

Police are praising the actions of neighbours who captured and held a man they believed was breaking into a house in Mount Maunganui.

A 49-year-old man has since been charged with burglary and remanded in custody.

Members of the public called police after they saw a man entering a property on Tay Street.

Several neighbours then stopped the man when he attempted to flee the area.

Senior Sergeant Joel Lamb says it is pleasing to see neighbours working together to keep their communities safe.
