Tougher regulations urged for hunters

A group for hunting guides says more stringent regulations must be introduced to prevent further accidental deaths.

Henry Worsp, 36, was sentenced on Thursday to six months home detention and 250 hours community work for accidentally shooting dead a hunting companion near Rotorua last September.

The Professional Hunters Guide Association said tougher safety regulations need to be implemented to prevent any future fatalities.

President Don Patterson said restrictions and more testing should be required for hunters prior to them going into the field.

But the Deerstalkers Association said such proposals are not necessary and hunters just need to be reminded of basic rules in order to prevent any deaths.
