Early results from cigarette image campaign 'positive'

The Ministry of Health says there are signs the use of disturbing images on cigarette packets may be starting to work, with 30% more calls to Quitline.

The campaign began a year ago, when cigarette manufacturers were given six months to put images showing the effects of smoking-related disease on packets.

The ministry's national tobacco programme manager, Karen Everson, says many of Quitline's new callers say the images have prompted them to make contact.

But Ms Everson says it is too early to attribute that increase solely to the campaign.

A set of new images will be put on cigarette packets from the end of this month to refresh the campaign.
