Medsafe is to look at a British review into over-the-counter cough and cold medicines for children under the age of 12.
The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Authority has found no robust evidence that 69 medicines it reviewed, work. Some caused serious side-effects, such as allergic reactions and hallucinations.
The UK agency recommends 36 medicines, some sold in New Zealand, no longer be given to children aged under six.
Medsafe says it reviewed the same medicines last year and new labels on products being sold from this month onwards, will recommend they not be sold to children under two years.
