Up to parents to keep children safe - criminologist

12:16 pm on 2 March 2009

A criminologist says parents need to look at their own parenting if they really want to protect their children from sex abusers.

Police removed a convicted paedophile for his own safety from the house where he was living at the weekend after a protest by about 100 people in the township of Patea in south Taranaki.

Canterbury University associate Professor Greg Newbold says the reoffending rate of paedophiles is lower than that of many other criminals.

He says children with weak relations with their parents are the most vulnerable and the responsibility lies with parents if they want their children to be safe from abusers.
