Food prices fell by 1% in 2012, including a 0.2% drop for the month of December.
Statistics New Zealand says prices are attributable to the low cost of non-alcoholic drinks which helped offset the rising cost of poultry and fruit.
Other falls included groceries (down 3.6%) milk (9.4%) and bread (4.2%).
