Group goes to court over freedom camping ban

8:27 pm on 15 January 2013

A group representing caravan owners has filed a submission in the High Court in a bid to get the Westland District Council to lift a bylaw banning freedom camping.

The Motor Caravan Association is calling the bylaw introduced by the council in 2011 over-restrictive and a breach of the Freedom Camping Act.

The association's general manager says the bylaw is unreasonable and is inconsistent with the Bill of Rights.

In his affidavit to the court, Bruce Lochore says a number of local authorities have deferred decisions on adopting or proposing freedom camping bylaws due to the confusion in Westland.

The district council has 25 days to respond to the submission.
