Ethnic council hopes 90-day trial will benefit migrants

The Federation of Ethnic Councils says migrants should get more job opportunities under the Government's 90-day trial employment scheme.

The Employment Relations Amendment Act allows businesses with fewer than 20 staff to take on employees for a 90-day trial period.

During that time, they can be sacked with no right of appeal.

A spokesperson for the federation, Pancha Narayanan, says it can be difficult for migrants and refugees to win jobs.

However, he believes the law change will give employers the confidence to take them on.
