7:13 pm on 3 March 2009

An international student has been charged over the stabbing of a teacher at Avondale College in Auckland.

David Warren, 49, was attacked while writing on a whiteboard during a Japanese class at the college on Tuesday morning.

A 17-year-old student was arrested shortly after the incident at a house in Blockhouse Bay.

Police say he has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and will appear in Auckland District Court on Wednesday.

Mr Warren was treated and discharged from hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

Avondale College principal Brent Lewis says the arrested student has been in New Zealand for only a matter of weeks.

Mr Lewis says the school will review its security procedures when all information surrounding the stabbing is known.

He says the students are distressed, but are in good shape and are receiving counselling.

About 20 students who saw incident have been interviewed by police.
