Illegal dumping costs ratepayers thousands

12:04 am on 21 January 2013

Hastings District Council says illegal rubbish dumping is costing ratepayers thousands of dollars each year.

Four big trailer loads of rubbish, including recycling, were removed from roadsides leading into the city over thepast week.

Council waste minimisation officer Dominic Salmon says contractors usually remove between four and 10 loads of rubbish each week.

He says the recent loads were larger than normal, and cost about $600 dollars to get to the official dumping facilities.

Mr Salmon says there are cameras at known black spots and rubbish facilities to try to stop people dumping rubbish illegally.

He says in the past year, 30 infringement notices have been handed out to people dumping illegally.
