Man killed after car plunges into Te Mata Peak gully

A man has died after the car he was driving left the road and plunged down a gully on Te Mata Peak near Havelock North in Hawke's Bay.

Police say a member of the public alerted emergency services after seeing the car upside down in the gully near the top of the road to the peak about 10am on Wednesday.

Police don't know how the accident happened. A serious crash unit is investigating.

They say the driver has not been identified, but have confirmed that he was the only person in the car.
