Man jailed over fatal morphine injection

A man who admitted fatally injecting his partner with morphine has been jailed for two-and-a-half years.

Darryl Donald James Cox, 30, was sentenced at the High Court in Wellington on Thursday for the manslaughter of Tina Marshall, who died in Carterton in 2007.

Cox made morphine from stolen poppies and Ms Marshall said she wanted to try it.

She had trouble injecting herself and he helped her.

However, she experienced breathing difficulties soon after and died in hospital.

Cox's lawyer asked that his client be sentenced to home detention so he could continue caring for his children.

Justice Clifford said that was inappropriate and jailed Cox.
