A pregnant woman has been stabbed in the chest in South Auckland.

A Counties-Manukau police spokesperson said the woman was stabbed with a steak knife outside a house in Weymouth about 10.30pm on Tuesday.

They say the attack occured after the former partner of the woman's boyfriend confronted them at the Taitimu Drive house where they were drinking.

Police say the ex-partner was knocked to the ground before lunging at the pregnant woman, stabbing her in the chest.

She was taken to Middlemore Hospital where she was in a stable condition.

Officers were to speak to witnesses and other residents on Wednesday and complete a scene examination.
