Ceremony to bless Cape Reinga restoration work

3:03 pm on 5 March 2009

A blessing ceremony has been held at Cape Reinga to mark the end of restoration work there.

Ngati Kuri and Te Aupouri worked with the Department of Conservation to transform the site which Maori consider one of the most sacred in New Zealand.

Toilets and carparks have been moved from the area around the lighthouse, Te Ara Wairua, or path of the spirits, with new facilities built further back.

Iwi have planted more than 300,000 native trees sourced from local seed.

Transit recently completed the sealing of the road to Cape Reinga. It was the last stretch of unsealed state highway in New Zealand.
