White Island seismic activity changes pattern

7:57 am on 30 January 2013

Bay of Plenty Regional Council says seismic activity on White Island continues to pose a greater than usual hazard to visitors to the island.

It says the crater lake is drying out and in the last few days mud and rocks have been hurled into the surrounding area.

The council says conditions have changed and the continuous volcanic tremors of the past few weeks have altered to a pattern of intermittent tremors.

But it says further vigorous explosions of mud, rock and perhaps molten sulphur, are possible with little or no warning.
