Army resumes exercises at fire site

10:27 pm on 30 January 2013

The army has resumed live firing at its rifle range at Burnham Military Camp for the first time on Wednesday since a fire believed to have been caused by shrapnel from a grenade.

One hundred firefighters were needed to contain the fire near West Melton, west of Christchurch, last week.

The camp's commandant, Major Bill Blair, says soldiers will be restricted to using machine guns and small arms until the hot and dry conditions lift.

An investigation into the exact cause of the fire is continuing.
