Government to sell residential school site

The site of a former residential school linked to abuse allegations in an east Auckland suburb is being sold by the Government.

The Ministry of Education decided to close the Waimokoia Residential School in Bucklands Beach in 2009, citing a lengthy history of governance and management issues.

A proposal to turn the site into a secondary school for troubled teenagers was scrapped in 2012 following opposition from the community.

Howick Local Board member Steve Udy believes the decision is a positive move for the community.

"I think it's a good move because it closes the book on a saga that's been going on too long and it puts a lot of people's mind at rest. Hopefully, it will be developed for private housing of some type."

The ministry says it decided to sell the site last year and the process is in the initial stages.
