Several species of invertebrates that were previously thought to exist only in Australian waters are among a number of new creatures discovered in Fiordland.

A two-week survey by the National Institute for Water & Atmospheric Research and the Department of Conservation has found 20 new invertebrates and six new species of algae.

The finds included sponges and seasquirts.

Some of the dives were in areas that have never been explored before.

NIWA says another dive is planned which is likely to yield more new species.

The agency says a remote operated vehicle will be able to reach depths of 150 metres.
