The New Zealand Schools' Debating Team is ranked number one after eight rounds at the world championships in Turkey.

New Zealand has won against countries including Wales, Argentina, and Lebanon.

Schools Debating Council president Desley Horton said the team is pleased with its performance as it heads into the knock-out rounds.

Canada, which is ranked 16th, will face New Zealand on Sunday evening (NZT).

New Zealand will go into the quarter finals on Monday (NZT), if it wins that debate.
