A quad biker has been airlifted to hospital after his bike rolled on him in Wellington.

The Life Flight air ambulance service was called to the Red Rocks track on Wellington's south coast at about 2.30pm on Saturday.

A crew member aboard the helicopter, Julian Burn, says they arrived to find a man, who is in his 50s, had received moderate injuries after crashing his bike.

"He was going up an incline and it got a bit steep and it (the quad bike) has gone back on top of him. The only way that we were going to get that out of there was by heleicopter because of the sheer cliff on one side with a couple of hundred metres drop."

Mr Burn says the man has been taken to Wellington Hospital.
