Family seeking answers over death of prisoner

10:55 am on 12 March 2009

The family of a prisoner found dead after being attacked by fellow inmates in Auckland Prison at Paremoremo has hired a lawyer to find answers to questions about how he died.

Tue Faavae, 23, was found dead in the east wing of the prison at about 11am on Sunday, 1 March. A homicide investigation has begun.

His family has spoken out about their concerns over how he was able to be attacked.

Prison officers have also voiced concern about problems at the prison, where there has been a series of serious attacks on workers.

Members of the Corrections Association have passed a unanimous vote of no confidence in the prison manager.

The department is speaking to three guards as it investigates the killing.

Northern regional manager Warren Cummins says they are not technically suspended. He says this is an employment investigation not relating to discipline.
