Nurses say they have to sacrifice their own time and money to keep up with the latest developments in their field.
A survey by the Nurses Organisation shows nurses are paying for their own training in a system which relies heavily on their goodwill.
More than a third of those surveyed say not all their time was paid for while they attended training courses.
A researcher for the union says many nurses with families simply don't have the spare time.
