7:40 am on 4 February 2013

Monday's headlines: Canterbury anglers are reporting one of the best salmon seasons on record and the peak of the season is still to come; tighter water restrictions looming in Hamilton; new food fad in Auckland: deep fried chocolate chip cookies.

NZ Herald

The New Zealand Herald features the case of a sports star who was two times the legal limit being let-off a drink-drive charge. Judge Graham Hubble also granted the woman name suppression.

The paper quotes Queen's Counsel Nigel Hampton as saying the ruling sends the wrong messages about drink driving and its consequenses.

The newspaper also reports on a new food fad in Auckland: deep fried chocolate chip cookies on the North Shore.

Waikato Times

The Waikato Times reports that Hamilton may soon be facing tighter water restrictions. Officials are expected to meet on Monday to discuss solutions to the city's water shortage - including charging businesses more for their water.

And a fire in Port Waikato on Sunday which burned more than 40 hectares of scrub is believed to have been caused by a car which got stuck in a sand dune. The blaze took almost four hours to be brought under control.

Dominion Post

The Dominion Post reports that New Zealanders living temporarily in Australia could eventually win residency - but only after spending nearly a decade there.

Australian officials are proposing a pathway which would allow New Zealanders to gain permanent residency if they have lived there for eight years or more.

And the paper reports on the most expensive and cheapest homes sold in the lower North Island in the last year. A Wellington house went for $2.6 million and a house in Masterton sold for $97,000.

The Press

The Press leads with fears that changes to the Family Court will silence children, impose financial barriers on parents and lead to what are described as "bloody" legal matters.

The Government is proposing the changes, including a family dispute service fee of $900, in an attempt to control the number of cases going before the court.

Anglers on Canterbury rivers are reporting one of the best salmon seasons on record with the peak of the season still to come.

ODT

The Otago Daily Times reports Fashion Week is worth $1.8 million to Dunedin, but with no naming sponsor, the event is having to rely on council grants to continue.

Three men taking part in a fishing competition over the weekend had to be rescued after their boat grounded on rocks near St Clair.
