Appeal mooted on drink-drive case discharge

Legal advice is being sought by police over whether or not to appeal a court decision to discharge a sportswoman on drink driving charges.

The woman appeared in Gisborne District Court last week on a charge of driving with almost twice the legal alcohol limit.

She appeared before Judge Graham Hubble and was discharged without conviction and granted permanent name suppression on the basis she was a public figure and being identified would hurt her career.

But police say she is not well-known nationally and does not play a mainstream sport.

They are seeking advice from Crown Law on whether to lodge appeal against the decision.

A decision could take a several weeks and the police will not comment further until then.
