Pacific preschools struggle financially

Pacific language preschools are struggling financially because parents cannot afford to pay fees.

Rolls are falling at some licenced Pacific early childhood centres contacted by Radio New Zealand while others are offering free days or accepting donations to keep children attending.

Auckland University Pasifika early childhood education head Diane Mara says Pacific preschools have taken a double hit from cuts to Government funding and their parents' incomes, and some have had to close.

She says there is a gap between the Government's goal of getting more Pacific children into quality early childhood education and the resources to do it.
