Christchurch mayor Bob Parker is assuring ratepayers the city council's finances are "rock solid".

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee called an unexpected private meeting with Mr Parker and councillors on Tuesday morning to discuss the earthquake-hit city's financial plans.

The mayor, Bob Parker, agrees but is assuring ratepayers that whatever option is decided on, the city council's finances are sound.

"Financially this council's rock solid. I think there's increased clarity around that for both government and any other interested party."

The council is spending $1.5 million dollars of public money a day on roading and infrastructure repair.
