Police are investigating the death of a middle-aged woman following the discovery of a body on Westshore Beach on the outskirts of Napier on Tuesday morning.
Detective senior sergeant Dave de Langesays members of a local surf club found the body about 9.30am when they went to the beach for training.
He says it appears the woman was in the water for only a short time prior to her death.
Mr de Lange says the body hasn't yet been identified and a post mortem will be held in Wellington on Wednesday.
He says a small motor home which police believe the woman used was found in a carpark near the beach.
