Police interviews with the parents of a man whose burning body was found in Auckland last week have failed to shed light on why he withdrew a large sum of money before he died.

The body of Shalvin Prasad was found in a scrub fire in Kingseat on 31 January.

Police say the 21-year-old took tens of thousands of dollars from his term investment account eight hours before he went missing.

They say they have now recovered his cellphone with help from a member of the public and it is being analysed by the electronic crime laboratory.

Mr Prasad's family have told detectives they do not know why he withdrew the money, but have been able to supply more details about what he was wearing and carrying with him when they last saw him.
