7:35 pm on 8 February 2013

Ninety peopleturned out in Kaikoura on Friday to hear plans by the oil and petroleum company Anadarko, to drill for oil off its coast.

Anadarko has consent to do seismic work and analysis off the coast over a three-year period.

Kaikoura mayor Winston Gray says people at the meeting had plenty of questions for the company about risks for the community.

Mr Gray says they also wanted to know more about the safety concerns surrounding the exploration.

He says while there appeared to be some scepticism from the community initially, he believes both parties learnt a lot today.

Energy Minister Simon Bridges and Ngai Tahu chairperson Sir Mark Solomon also attended.
