Trans-Tasman student loans recovery scheme mooted

5:47 am on 10 February 2013

People who move to Australia from New Zealand to avoid repaying their student loans could soon be caught by a new student debt recovery scheme.

Prime Ministers John Key and Julia Gillard, agreed in Queenstown on Saturday to investigate a trans-Tasman scheme.

Mr Key said it would be another useful step in sharing information and connecting the two countries' systems.

He said it would also ensure student debt is recovered wherever graduates end up in the trans-Tasman economy.

Officials will work on the proposal and report to next year's meeting.
