Work done on colossal squid exhibit

Remedial work is currently underway on Te Papa's popular colossal squid exhibit.

The 4.2 metre long creature was caught last year by a fishing crew in the Antarctic.

Te Papa spokesperson, Jane Keig, says this is the first time a creature like this has been preserved in glycol instead of more traditional chemicals.

She says staff are making sure the squid isn't touching the tank's sides, as well checking the levels of formula.

Ms Keig says the squid hasn't been damaged, although its skin is tightening which makes it appear as though parts are shrinking.

The squid will be on display for three years and the current work should be finished next week.
