5:36 am on 12 February 2013

A man accused of murdering a woman whose body was found in an Invercargill hostel early on Saturday morning has been remanded in custody after his first court appearance.

The accused, 30, who was granted name suppression, appeared in the Invercargill District Court on Monday and entered no plea to a charge of murder.

Police say he was known to Nicola Jean Fleming, 38, whose body was found in the Haven Accommodation Hostel on Tyne St where she had been staying.

The defendant's next court appearance has been set down for 27 February.

A post-mortem was expected to be completed on Monday, as a forensic examination at the hostel continues.
