Three men accused of a crime spree in the capital in 2011 are on trial in the Wellington District Court.

Stephen O'Neill, Lance O'Neill and Edwin Holthim face a range of charges including arson and car conversion.

Crown prosecutor Jamie Eng told the jury that the trio are burglars and the bulk of the crimes they are alleged to have committed occurred in May 2011.

He said the men used stolen Subaru cars to break into businesses, including the Cellar Room liquor store in Brooklyn.

Once they had finished with the cars, two of them were burnt. The accused also threw bottles containing petrol into the Karori police station in an unsuccessful attempt to burn it down.

All three accused deny the charges, which their lawyers say must be proved beyond reasonable doubt.
