Christchurch council agrees to three-year plan

Christchurch City Council and the Government have reached a compromise over setting the direction for spending on infrastructure in the city.

The council had been due to set out its intentions for the next 10 years in its long-term plan, but the Government intervened, saying that was impossible given the uncertainties surrounding the final bill for repairing earthquake damage.

In a joint announcement on Monday, the council and the Government said a three-year plan will be drawn up instead, with the Government promising to announce exactly how much of the repair bill it will be willing to pay for by the end of April.

In the meantime, the 10-year long-term plan is deferred until 2015.
