Karla Cardno's killer denied parole again

5:36 pm on 12 February 2013

The murderer of the Lower Hutt schoolgirl Karla Cardno has been declined parole.

The 13-year old was tortured, raped and buried alive on the remote Pencarrow coast in Wellington in 1989.

Paul Joseph Dally was sentenced to life imprisonment for her murder in 1990 and waived his right to appear before the Parole Board on Tuesday.

The board said it believes that Dally, now in his 50s, still poses an undue risk to the community's safety.

Its full decision will be released in a couple of days and Dally will reappear before the Parole Board next year. The board previously declined parole in March 2010.

Karla Cardno's stepfather Mark Middleton says Dally is far too dangerous to be released and is not to be trusted.

In 2001, Mr Middleton was given a nine-month suspended jail sentence for threatening to kill him.
