Schools gear up for merger announcement

The principals of some Christchurch schools facing closure or merger say while operations are 'business as usual' they are nervous ahead of a Government announcement due on Monday.

Education Minister Hekia Parata announced last year that the ministry planned to shut or merge 39 schools in the country's largest overhaul of the education system following recent earthquakes in the region.

Schools had until early December to submit counter-proposals.

Central New Brighton School principal Toni Burnside says teachers are stressed and worried about what might be announced and students often ask her about it.

She says ministry representatives will visit the school early on Monday morning to make the announcement.

The principal of a Christchurch school earmarked for closure says they are preparing for the worst-case scenario.

Branston Intermediate School principal Jennifer O'Leary says she hopes the ministry has actually considered their proposals.

"We gave four options. The first from which we think is eminently sensible is go away for three to five years, because there's a census happening this year and we'll get more of an idea where the population is going."

Ms O'Leary says there is no rush to pull the school down as it has been fully repaired.
