New anti-terrorism squad being formed

2:19 pm on 17 March 2009

A new anti-terrorism squad is being set up to investigate domestic terrorism operations.

The Counter Terrorist Tactical Action Group is part of the elite army Special Air Service, or SAS.

Brigadier Dave Gawn says given the commitments of the SAS overseas, it is necessary to establish a group focused on domestic terrorism.

The group, which will be made up of members from the three armed forces, will be selected in November and will follow a three-month training programme.

Brigadier Gawn says the group will be involved in security at the Rugby World Cup. However, its main focus will be on terrorism.
