The Government has announced more than $3 million in grants to help build new social housing units in Auckland, Nelson and Canterbury.

Housing Minister Nick Smith says the 26 new units will be built for people on low incomes and those with special needs.

The grants are the first from the Government's new $100 million social housing fund to assist families with acute housing needs.

The successful community organisations are VisionWest Community Trust in West Auckland, the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust and ComCare Charitable Trust in Canterbury.
