The family of Steven Wallace are considering their options after a report into his death cleared the police of misconduct.
Mr Wallace was shot four times by Senior Constable Keith Abbott after embarking on a rampage in the Taranaki town of Waitara in 2000 and threatened to kill an officer.
The Independent Police Conduct Authority on Tuesday issued a report which cleared Mr Abbott and another officer involved in Mr Wallace's death of any misconduct.
The lawyer for Mr Wallace's family, Ron Mansfield, says the family will review the report carefully and are considering whether they have the energy to take further action.
Police Association president Greg O'Connor says the officers' actions were justified and they followed police procedures.
